What is Harassment and Discrimination?
DCPS has policies and procedures in place to protect its employees, students and anyone associated with the District from discrimination, harassment. Discrimination can take many forms, from subtle remarks to intentional actions that create a hostile or offensive environment. Harassment is any unwelcome behavior that is made specifically to target someone because of their membership in a protected class. Harassment can include physical contact, verbal abuse, and sexual advances. It is important to remember that harassment is not limited to people who are traditionally viewed as weaker or vulnerable – anyone can be harassed.
If you experience harassment at work, school, or elsewhere in DCPS, please don’t hesitate to reach out for help. Your local human resources office or the Commission on Human Rights can provide you with information and guidance on how to address the situation.
What happens if I feel like I have experienced harassment or discrimination at work or school?
If you feel that you have experienced harassment or discrimination at work or school, there are several policies and procedures in place to protect you from these types of incidents. First, please speak with your supervisor about the situation. They may be able to help guide you through the process of filing a complaint or reporting the incident. Additionally, DCPS has a Procedures for Handling Discrimination Complaints webpage which includes information on how to file a formal complaint as well as contact information for various offices that can provide support during the investigation. Finally, if you are still experiencing harassment or discrimination after speaking with your supervisor or contacting one of the offices listed on the Procedures for Handling Discrimination Complaints webpage, you can reach out to our Discrimination Hotline at 1-800-342-3772 for assistance. We want to make sure that everyone who works or attends school in DCPS feels safe and supported no matter what.
How do I file a complaint for discrimination/harassment?
If you believe that you have been discriminated against or harassed at work, school, or in any other setting, it is important to take action. You can file a complaint with your local Department of Civil Rights.
Your local Department of Civil Rights can provide you with information on how to file a complaint and what to expect during the process.
If you are unable to find help through your local Department of Civil Rights, you can also contact the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). The EEOC is a federal agency that protects employees from discrimination in the workplace.
You may also want to consider filing a complaint with your employer. If you are an employee, your employer is responsible for providing a safe and harassment-free workplace for you. If you are not an employee, filing a complaint with your employer may not be as effective, but it is still an important step to take.
